Evaluating Web Sites

Why should anyone evaluate, or judge the worth, of a web site?
  • You want to make sure that you are getting your facts right, and if you take information from a web site that has erroneous information, you will look silly.
  • Perhaps the author of the web site wants to persuade you to think or act in a particular way; think about it. Can you name the company that states: "Have it your way" or "Eat fresh"? Those companies want you to know their slogans so you will buy their products.
  • Sometimes the information is old- look for dates as to when the site was last updated; do you want information on how to fix your computer from 1989? Of course not!
  • There ISN'T any type of organization, such as the police or government, who will take away web sites that are wrong or offensive to others, so it's up to us, the people that use the internet to figure out for ourselves what is GOOD information and what is not.
  • ANYONE can publish a web site, and they can say anything they want on the site; if I wanted to make a web site saying that Martin Luther King Jr was a white man who had 14 kids, and he was famous for working at the San Francisco Zoo, I could do that.
